Europe must be willing to take charge of its own destiny, the French government spokeswoman said on Wednesday, just prior to the announcement that Donald Trump had won the US presidential election.

“We must not ask ourselves what the United States will do, but what Europe is capable of doing.
“In a number a key sectors — defence, industrial recovery, decarbonisation — we must take charge of our own destiny,” Maud Bregeon told the RTL broadcaster.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted his congratulations to Trump, saying that he is “ready to work together as we did for the past four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For greater peace and prosperity”.

Macron also said he and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will work on “a more united, stronger, more sovereign Europe” as Donald Trump won the US presidential election.
They would do this while “cooperating with the United States of America and defending our interests and values,” he said on X.

At a cabinet meeting, Macron again stressed the need for European nations to draw together, government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon told reporters.
Trump has won the US presidential election, media said on Wednesday, defeating Kamala Harris in a stunning political comeback.
Many in Brussels were jittery about the prospect ahead of the vote, as Trump has threatened to upend NATO, cut a quick deal with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and impose trade tariffs.
